Rochester Stars player Matt Esposito has committed to play for Division III powerhouse Oswego State for the fall of 2013.
Esposito is in his second year playing for the Stars, and is third on the team in points with 29 through 32 games this season. The Fayetteville, NY native is excited for the opportunity to play college hockey so close to home.
“The best part of playing so close to home is that my parents will get to see me play,” said Esposito. “The program is also a great fit for me.”
Stars head coach Tony Maksymiu believes Esposito’s leadership abilities will allow him to find success at the college level.
“Matt is not only a great player but has been a great leader as our captain this season,” Maksymiu said. “His teammates look to him as a leader and he’s embraced that role for us.”
Oswego State is a member of the SUNYAC conference, and has won eight SUNYAC championships. The Lakers won the DIII National Championship in 2007, and have made four of the last six DIII Frozen Fours, including three straight.

Rochester Clinical Research is performing a Phase III clinical trial of an investigational vaccine for Meningitis B, the form of meningitis that took Tyler Putnam’s life.
There are many strains of bacteria that can cause Meningitis. The current Menactra® vaccine provides protection against 4 strains of meningococcal bacteria (A, C, W135 & Y). It does not cover Meningitis B strain, which causes up to 1/3rd of the cases of bacterial meningitis in the U.S.
This vaccine study is for 10-25 year olds. Study participants will receive a vaccination at three office visits (at the first visit, two months later, and then four months after that). Two-thirds of participants will be randomly assigned to receive the investigational Meningitis B vaccine, while 1/3 of participants will receive an FDA-approved Hepatitis A vaccine (Havrix®), for comparison purposes.
The study will last 6-8 months, with a follow-up phone call six months later. There are four office visits to Rochester Clinical Research, and five phone calls. All participants receive three vaccinations, but there are no blood draws.
Study participants receive a stipend for time and travel of $200, pro-rated at $50 for each completed office visit.
For each “Friend of Tyler” that qualifies for participation in the study, Rochester Clinical Research will make a $50 donation to the Tyler Putnam Foundation. At the conclusion of the study, RCR will ‘match’ its own $50 donation per participant, for a total of $100 for each “Friend of Tyler” who completes the study.
To see if you or your child might qualify for this opportunity, please call RCR at 585-288-0890, and be sure to identify yourself as a “Friend of Tyler." For more information on the study, please CLICK HERE.
About the Tyler Putnam Foundation:
The Tyler Putnam Foundation is a 501c3 not for profit organization set up to assist families who have recently suffered a tragedy and or life altering occurrence and need assistance with registration fees for youth hockey. Through Tyler’s Foundation, families will be able to apply for registration assistance for an upcoming hockey season.
Tyler’s foundation will also provide information about Meningitis and the importance of vaccinations (Even though Tyler was vaccinated, like the flu there are many different strains of the virus) and the importance of Meningitis research including clinical studies that are being performed today that hopefully will provide a vaccine that would cover most, if not all strains of the virus.
Tyler’s dream was to play for his High School team, The Irondequoit Eagles then Junior Hockey then Division I Hockey and ultimately Pro Hockey. He was able to realize two of those dreams, having played for IHS as an eighth and ninth grader then for his mentor Tony Maksymiu with the Maksymum Junior team here in Rochester. At the conclusion of his first Junior season, Tyler was well on his way of realizing his next dream. Tyler was offered roster spots on five Junior A teams from Rochester, Minnesota to San Diego, California. He was very excited about the upcoming season and looking forward to possibly leaving home to pursue his dream.
